This week’s prompt for #99wordstories at the Carrot Ranch is
March 14, 2022, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story about free pie. What kind of pie and freedom? Who is involved with pies? How is it free? Go where the prompt leads!
The Pie Scandal
Little Tittweaking’s resident poet developed a profitable sideline in protests to order. For a couple of quid and the promise of a favourable review of his poetry anthology, Godfrey’s Buttocks Are Coming Home, Plantagenet Flish would disrupt any planning meeting, blockade disputed footpaths and sabotage a rival’s leeks. His career ended when he joined in Nan Tucket’s Free Pie campaign only to be arrested for ripping the doors off the town jail in the mistaken belief the Pie in question was a wrongfully incarcerated individual with an unusual monicker rather than an unwanted pastry that Nan wanted to gift.
My name is Geoff Le Pard. Once I was a lawyer; now I am a writer. I've published several books: a four book series following Harry Spittle as he grows from hapless student to hapless partner in a London law firm; four others in different genres; a book of poetry; four anthologies of short fiction; and a memoir of my mother. I have several more in the pipeline.
I have been blogging regularly since 2014, on topic as diverse as: poetry based on famous poems; memories from my life; my garden; my dog; a whole variety of short fiction; my attempts at baking and food; travel and the consequent disasters; theatre, film and book reviews; and the occasional thought piece. Mostly it is whatever takes my fancy.
I avoid politics, mostly, and religion, always. I don't mean to upset anyone but if I do, well, sorry and I suggest you go elsewhere.
These are my thoughts and no one else is to blame. If you want to nab anything I post, please acknowledge where it came from.
Great story, Geoff but my eyes are on the pie. Did you make it? Hope you are going along okay.
The other morning, Geoff called me outside and pointed out a pair of Rainbow Lorikeets in the tree by the kitchen window. I was initially photographing them to share with my fellow bloggers overseas who haven’t seen these beaitufl birds, but I got drawn into their web myself and enchanted again. Thought you might appreciate them: https://beyondtheflow.wordpress.com/2022/03/16/rainbows-on-an-overcast-day/

I’m glad you saw the parakeets. They’re just gorgeous. I’m also pleased you made the pie and enjoyed it too. You did a great job by the look of it.
I have spent much of the night pasting my flash fictions into a word document and reworking quite a few. I’m interested to see what I can make of them. The striking thing going back in time, is returning back to 2019 and life before covid. We didn’t know what we were in for although there had been terrorist attacks. Goodness knows where we’re heading next. However, Mr and Geoff leave for Geelong in the morning. Provided he passes his covid test from today, he will be sailing onboard the Young Endeavour (a tall ship) into Sydney. It’s a terrible feeling knowing the whole adventure rests on that test. There’s still so much of it around.
Anyway, I’ll keep you posted.
Best wishes,
Ro
PS he had to leave Ventuerers when he turned 18 but might be signing up as a scout leader.
I’m loving these 99-word stories, Geoff. Great fun! And keeps the writing muscle working.

I did read your post about those parakeets. Evolution is bonkers sometimes. Yes I did make the pie and eat a fair bit too… hence feeling pretty good!

Well, the pie should have been green or you should have published this on Pi Day!

Green? I think I’ll pass.

An understandable misunderstanding. What apple variety did you use for that pie?
