This week’s carrot ranch prompt is
June 18, 2021, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story that features a solstice. What is the era and setting? Use the solstice as a celebration, metaphor, or talking point. Go where the prompt leads!
‘It’s the summer solstice on Tuesday, Logan.’
‘Yes? So?’
‘We should celebrate.’
‘Why? It’s just another day.’
‘No, it’s not. It’s the turning point. The longest day, the start of summer.’
‘It’s the beginning of the end of the year. Everything gets darker and colder from here.’
‘There you have the difference between us.’
‘You’re all airy-fairy and I’m rational.’
‘I live in the moment; you don’t.’
‘You ignore what’s in front of your face.’
‘And you miss the joy in embracing the now.’
‘Have you been at the mindfulness muesli again?’
‘I think I’ll become a Druid…’

About TanGental
My name is Geoff Le Pard. Once I was a lawyer; now I am a writer. I've published several books: a four book series following Harry Spittle as he grows from hapless student to hapless partner in a London law firm; four others in different genres; a book of poetry; four anthologies of short fiction; and a memoir of my mother. I have several more in the pipeline.
I have been blogging regularly since 2014, on topic as diverse as: poetry based on famous poems; memories from my life; my garden; my dog; a whole variety of short fiction; my attempts at baking and food; travel and the consequent disasters; theatre, film and book reviews; and the occasional thought piece. Mostly it is whatever takes my fancy.
I avoid politics, mostly, and religion, always. I don't mean to upset anyone but if I do, well, sorry and I suggest you go elsewhere.
These are my thoughts and no one else is to blame. If you want to nab anything I post, please acknowledge where it came from.
Reblogged this on Die Erste Eslarner Zeitung – Aus und über Eslarn, sowie die bayerisch-tschechische Region!.

Isn’t that what they advise – try everything once except incest and Morris dancing?

Well definitely the Morris dancing!

Nicely done. Jackie once knew a woman who, from the summer solstice, would regularly bemoan “the nights are drawing in”

I had an uncle with similar gloomy views…

I’m already laughing at how this would annoy so many of my “mindful” acquaintances.

Gosh lucky you to have all that positivity surrounding you. I hope their truths don’t clash with anyone else’s…

Mindfulness muesli…well it forces you to be if you’r actually eating it. I too know people who start moaning about the days getting shorter (for the next few months!!!!!) while I’m still starting bike rides at 7:00 pm.

I believe they prefer Sultanas (other Arabian despotic rulers’ wives are available)

I lived next door to the Sultanas. Nice people,

I thought them a bit dry, but sweet enough. Apparently they moved into cakes…

Thank you for the reminder, Geoff. It is the winter solstice here. Yay! Summer is coming. The birds are already building nests.

It’s dark and wet here, apparently we’re trialling a new early Novembet. I don’t think it’ll catch on.

Haha, other English bloggers are also complaining about the weather. In the USA they are having a very bad drought and heat waves. On the whole, I’d take the rain…

Oh me too. You can add layers for wet and cold, but I’ve yet to find a way to remove skin when I overheat
