The Penrose Conundrum (After Escher) #carrotranch #flashfiction

‘My bloody mother.’

‘What’s she done now?’

‘She asked me to take her car for a service…’

‘…so I was in a rush to get to the Post Office to pick up her letter, which had her new credit card in it and she had to sign for it…’

‘…which meant you needed the car to take her…’

‘…who’s telling this…?’

‘…but you couldn’t get it without her paying by her new card…’

‘…has she been talking to you?’

‘Only you…’

‘It’s my Dear Liza moment…’

‘…I was thinking Catch 22…’

‘… and there lies the difference between us…’

This was written in response to the latest prompt from the Carrot Ranch, here

March 21, 2019, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story that features a bucket of water. What is the condition of the water and what is the bucket for? Drop deep into the weel and draw from where the prompt leads!

Dear Liza moment...

Penrose/Escher – the steps discovered by Penrose and sons and drawn by MC Escher

About TanGental

My name is Geoff Le Pard. Once I was a lawyer; now I am a writer. I've published several books: a four book series following Harry Spittle as he grows from hapless student to hapless partner in a London law firm; four others in different genres; a book of poetry; four anthologies of short fiction; and a memoir of my mother. I have several more in the pipeline. I have been blogging regularly since 2014, on topic as diverse as: poetry based on famous poems; memories from my life; my garden; my dog; a whole variety of short fiction; my attempts at baking and food; travel and the consequent disasters; theatre, film and book reviews; and the occasional thought piece. Mostly it is whatever takes my fancy. I avoid politics, mostly, and religion, always. I don't mean to upset anyone but if I do, well, sorry and I suggest you go elsewhere. These are my thoughts and no one else is to blame. If you want to nab anything I post, please acknowledge where it came from.

  2. Haha, this is very obscure, Geoff. I wouldn’t not have got the Liza connection if you hadn’t posted the song.

I was trying to think of a way of referencing this song, but failed – well done

Oh my, yes, Geoff. This is very clever. Funny, I thought of the song immediately too but you have used it to clever effect. I didn’t recognise it as the Liza thing, though. I would have thought of it as the Henry thing. I guess that’s the difference between us. 🙂 But Catch 22 and the Escher stairs are also good examples. Life’s like that sometimes.

Now I know where you got your inspiration for Morgan and Logan from! They are incarnated of the Dear Liza song’s conundrum.
