Feline Lives

I write a lot about Dog; it’s natural. He and I are close.

Perhaps too close.

But Dog is merely the latest in a long line of family pets.

Currently we have two twin sister cats:

Nutmeg

And Tikka.

They are, by common consent, twenty-one years old.

And a bit dotty.

We’ve had three other cats before these two joined us.

The first, Sisyphus came on 30th November 1986. My thirtieth birthday and the day the Textiliste flew to Chicago for several weeks.

I was utterly terrified.

On day one I lost the little sprat of fur under the kitchen work units.

Day two and she headbutted a fried egg I’d cooked for myself, dying her face yellow.

Then Crocket

He brought toads into the house, dragging them through the cat flap. Did you know toads can squeal? Bloody frightening.

They also look like cat turds when left on a brown stair carpet and you haven’t yet put on your spectacles. There is little more startling than going to clear up what you think is a heap of feline faeces only to have it jump in the air and try and get away. Even J.K. Rowling didn’t conceive of possessed shit.

Briefly we were joined by Boots…

But sadly he was gone too soon.

But the two venerable old ladies are now becoming increasingly dotty  and taking to sitting near but not quite on various laps.

Maybe, one day, they will join Dog and me.

Or maybe they’ll follow Dog’s lead…

As long as they stay happy…

About TanGental

My name is Geoff Le Pard. Once I was a lawyer; now I am a writer. I've published several books: a four book series following Harry Spittle as he grows from hapless student to hapless partner in a London law firm; four others in different genres; a book of poetry; four anthologies of short fiction; and a memoir of my mother. I have several more in the pipeline. I have been blogging regularly since 2014, on topic as diverse as: poetry based on famous poems; memories from my life; my garden; my dog; a whole variety of short fiction; my attempts at baking and food; travel and the consequent disasters; theatre, film and book reviews; and the occasional thought piece. Mostly it is whatever takes my fancy. I avoid politics, mostly, and religion, always. I don't mean to upset anyone but if I do, well, sorry and I suggest you go elsewhere. These are my thoughts and no one else is to blame. If you want to nab anything I post, please acknowledge where it came from.

  5. 21! That’s a great age for a cat and amazing that they have both reached it.

Lovely to see the cats 🙂 They look well to be twenty one. At first I thought you meant twenty one in human years and mentally decided they were three in cat years until you said they were becoming a bit dotty with age. As for Dof – that dog is a born performer for the camera!

I love your pets! Our dog plays with hubby the same way. She doesn’t like cats though so we better not bring any home. Although we had cats for years BD (before dog)

  13. Every time you put up the photo of you and the missus and the furrs watching the TV and snacking I feel delighted! It’s such a great snippet about who you are – that shot would make a most interesting story prompt! The cats may be going a bit dotty – who wouldn’t at their advanced years – but they look in good shape.

Such elegant felines you’ve had even if the current two are dotty. They just don’t smile as endearingly as Dog.
