It’s All There, On A Plate #carrotranch #roughwriters

Charli’s prompt this week is

February 8, 2018, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story that includes fireweed. You can use it as the plant, a flower, a metaphor or as the name of someone or something. Go where the prompt leads. Burn bright when you write.

‘Hey Morgan, what you got?’

‘Caterpillar.’

‘Geez, that’s huge. Hey, it’s got a trunk.’

‘Yeah, it’s an elephant hawk moth.’

‘Must be really rare.’

‘Yeah, but you know it lives on a really common plant.’

‘Yeah?’

‘Fire weed.’

‘Funny. The Queen likes cornflakes.’

‘Is that so, Logan?’

‘And Jeremy Corbyn’s into quinoa.’

‘You just can’t tell from what they eat.’

‘We’re all the same under the skin.’

‘Troo dat.’

‘They say Trump only eats Mac burgers and fries.’

‘There has to be the exception that proves the rule.’

‘Never did understand that expression.’

‘Any more than I understand Trump.’

About TanGental

My name is Geoff Le Pard. Once I was a lawyer; now I am a writer. I've published several books: a four book series following Harry Spittle as he grows from hapless student to hapless partner in a London law firm; four others in different genres; a book of poetry; four anthologies of short fiction; and a memoir of my mother. I have several more in the pipeline. I have been blogging regularly since 2014, on topic as diverse as: poetry based on famous poems; memories from my life; my garden; my dog; a whole variety of short fiction; my attempts at baking and food; travel and the consequent disasters; theatre, film and book reviews; and the occasional thought piece. Mostly it is whatever takes my fancy. I avoid politics, mostly, and religion, always. I don't mean to upset anyone but if I do, well, sorry and I suggest you go elsewhere. These are my thoughts and no one else is to blame. If you want to nab anything I post, please acknowledge where it came from.

  1. Ha! No kidding.
You realize that now I have to drop what I’m doing and google fireweed… 😀 Good one, Geoff.

An elephant hawk moth – now that would take a Dr. Seuss to draw – perhaps it has orange hair and has a face resembling Trump’s?

That one is an exception to all the rules — he keeps demonstrating how many he can break. Don’t blame Morgan and Logan for puzzling over that one! And thanks for plugging the book!

  7. You are one clever writer, Geoff. I have nearly finished Life in a Flash – there are some great pieces in it.

Caterpillars and moths – you got me. Quinoa – not so sure about that, then it all went downhill from there. 🙂 Gave me a smile though. Well done. The elephant hawk moth is quite gorgeous. Do its caterpillars really feed on fireweed, or is that literary licence?
